t5 VSS Change of Speedo Gear ?

t5 VSS Change of Speedo Gear ?
I just picked up a new speedo gear for my t5. It came attached to a metal shaft and is not easily removable.
From the original Vss I was able to pop off the gear on the top, while trying to actually pull the whole shaft out.
I tried to then pull on the shaft , but I did not want to break anything so I have let it alone.
My question is, for those that have changed your t5 VSS driven gear, did the new one look like the one pictured below?
How did you go about swapping the gear?
I was thinking of tapping the gear off the new shaft and placing it on the old....
