pilot bushing removal problems

Attempting a clutch replacement on my 83 Z28 and running into problems removing old pilot bushing. Have tried grease packing method with no luck so went to Autozone and borrowed pilot bushing remover and slide hammer. Anyway, when attempting to extract it that way the tool does nothing more than dig through the bushing, leaving little "trenches" in its wake. Needless to say, bushing is still lodged in place. Any other suggestions on removal before i get frustrated and just try to grind it out? Afraid to do so but at this point I'm not sure if i have any other choice.

p/n A78 from snap on, lot on e bay cheap. not sure of price from snap on. you can also tap the old bushing. figure out what's a close size, metric or american and tap it then screw a bolt it and it'll come right out.

I have an '83 also. For some reason I had the same problem.

I didn't worry about tapping it out though. Just find long bolt at the hardware store that can be screwed into the bore of the bushing....it's bronze, so it'll cut it's own threads. You could stick a smaller bolt inside so it bottoms out on the crank bore, and screw the large one in the bushing. When the large bolt contacts the smaller one inside the crank bore, it SHOULD push the old pilot bearing out.

What ede said should also work however. Give it a shot!!

Clutch back in car, won't disengage

Searched around for a tap yesterday and wasn't able to find one large enough locally so finally got a little daring and just grinded the sucker out. no big deal. unfortunatly, had hoped that replacing the clutch, throwout bearing, clutch fork, and resurfacing of flywheel would solve my problem but unfortunatly it didn't. Transmission still stiff getting into gear, and clutch will not fully disengage.
Not sure of what next step should be. have pulled out linkage and expected the bushings but found no problems their, am afriad it has somethilng to do with the transmission or maybe, if i'm lucky, the linkage at the pedal. Had considered taking tranny to local transmission shop while it was pulled out of the car but decided it probably wouldn't be necessary (oops). Anybody have any possiable diagnosis on what may be causing my problems?

Sure - I assume you have the Z bar setup like I do. Check the crossbar that mounts between your frame and goes the the ball stud in your block. You may need new bushings if there's too much play.

Another thing it could be is the throwout bearing not in the clutch fork the right way.

Checked bushings in z bar about two weeks ago and they seemed to be in good condition. I had planned on replacing them just the same, but even though I ordered bushings for that particular application from local dealership the shmucks ordered bushings for what I believe is the linkage at the pedal.
Throwout bearing seems to be installed properly (double checked it just to be sure) so am hoping for the best but fearing the worse.
Clutch pedal has about an inch of play even though linkage is adjusted practically all the way out, and no matter what I try, I can't seem to convince it to shift into gear smoothly, let alone get the clutch to disengage. Guess I'll try calling a few local transmission shops and see what they can do for me. Hope it's just something stupid....I've been known to overlook the obvious.

Try doing a search....

I found one thing here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ow+out+bearing

Not trying to be insulting when I say this....are you REALLY sure the throwout bearing is in right?? It's easy to mess up, I almost did....

I bet it's something simple. Hope you find it.

Transmission shop???

If needed - Get back under there and yank it out, see what's going on, and be glad you don't have an auto!! j/k

Seriously, I must've pulled my trans at least 6 times....you really start getting proficient after a while!!
