Won't Shift out of First
i have a 91z28 with the 700r4, just got the car recently for a few hundred dollares and the transmission has park, reverse, neutral and first, it won't shift, but otherwise the rest of the car is in real good shape for 400 bucks. I have asked a few friends for opinions and everyone tells me to take the tranny out and let someone else fix it. Someone mentioned a govener that might need to have a gear fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a governor problem.
When you have it in drive and are moving, then let off the accelerator, does it just coast like in neutral, or does it slow down like it would if the shifter were in 1st? If it coasts, the governor is the likely culprit, but if it slows down, it could be something in the valve body or elsewhere that isn't letting it shift.
Either way, it's gotta come out..

Pull the governor and look for a stripped or broken gear. The valve in the governor must also be able to move freely end to end
about 1/16". The governor can be found at most tranny shops for
$2-$10$. It is very easy to change. Tech at tranny shop can change the gear for you in about 5-10 minutes for a few $$.

When i have it in first and let off it coasts like in neutral, i thought it was kinda weird that it didn't feel like the engine was slowing it down when i let off the acclerator. Uncle Sam is sending me out of state for a few days, again, so i'll get her on a lift and check it when i get back mid december. Hopefully it's just the govener.
A while ago, i had the same problems, but the car WOULD shift to 3'rd and 4'th but you had to rev the engine strait up to about 5k rpm, then let go of the throttle, and when you feel the shift (its only there for a second) put ur foot back on the throttle.
But for a while i thought that i only had 1st and reverse. it was under warrenty to they fixed it for 50 bucks. Here is what the recept said about it....
Transmission pan gasket
Seal
Gasoline
Replace Transmission pan Gasket
Replace Transmission governor seal
Replace Transmission govonor
Replace to shift, repair transmission oil
judging from that, its the governor.....luck to ya
