how hard is it to install the Transgo shiftkit?

my transgo should be arriving shortly and i was just wondering how hard installing one is. i won't be doing it on jackstands a friend of mine has a car lift.

i really dont know much about trannys, what is involved with installing the kit?

on a level of 1-10 with 1 being a monkey could do it and 10 being a certified macanic would have a hard time, how difficult is it?

3-4

Back in the day (1990) I installed a TCI shift kit into my Caprice, it was an 84. I used the stage two kit (the kit had 3 stages). I didn't want it to have the racing shift because it was a daily driver. When I installed the TCI kit I was 20 years old and had never been inside a transmision before. It was not that bad at all. I got good results and it was easy I thought. Just follow the directions to the tee, and if your kit comes in several stages, choose the stage you want and read thru it several times. It may also be helpful to copy the instructions and cut out or black out any instructions that are for the other stage buildups. I say this because if you don't do this you might get carried away (like I did yesterday) and do a proceedure that is for one of the other stages!

I am not ASE certified, but I am a Maint Tech for a large dairy corp. and I just wrapped up a complete overhaul on my 700R4 today. I did it with the help of my Dad who was an Allison tranny guy among other things. It wasn't that bad at all really.

I'd say installing the shift kit was a 3-4 the first time around (1990), before I had any real mechanical training, and I did it on jackstands, a lift will be very nice. Use Petrolium Jelly (Vaseline) to hold the check ***** in place when you reasemble it.

Its not too bad, just time consuming. I think it took about 6 hours for me on jackstands and bringing the parts up 3 stories to my aprtment to work on them.

For one, it shoudl come with a videp that shows you how to do it. It's very helpful. But basically, you drop the pan, pull the valve body, swap some springs and valves and fill some fluid holes and add some.

Yous hsoudl also have the servo to replace which wasn't the easiest to get out, my friends wanted to drill a hole through the floor board to do. DO NOT DO THIS. It come sout with a little pry or drop the tranny down as much as you can.

All in all, just take you time. Watch the video and read the instructions
