vss sender help please

Im doing some gauge swapping and the question i need to ask this board is i pulled the cluster and the buffer box out of an 86 lg4 bird but it didnt have a tranny and i need a vss sender for a 700r4 carbed car with 3.73 rear gears. If i get atleast a sender without the little gear, where can i get a gear (aftermarket since i think gm discontinued) and what years of donor cars would have a vss sender unit compadable with those gauges and buffer box? Thanx.

The question is does your trans now use a VSS or a regular speedometer drive. If it uses a regular gear drive now you will have to do more than just install a VSS in it. You will have to pull the tailhousing off the trans and install a reluctor wheel, so that the VSS has a source from which to get a signal. Then you will probably have to run an aftermarket buffer box, because the 3.73s were never a factory option for your car. Another option would be to use an Autometer speedometer, which can be calibrated for different wheel/tire packages and rear gear ratios just by pressing a button. It doesn't require a buffer box, and will read right off a factory GM VSS signal.

i actually got what i was looking for sort of (pic attached) and i believe it should swap right into the tranny and ill wire it up. Now my main question is where would i get a buffer box or a gear with diff teeth to match the 3.73's vs the stuff i have now? The stuff i have now is a buffer box and a gear from a 2.73 gear car. How much speedo inaccuracy will these things give me? And last of all with these current parts will my actual speed be in direct correlation with what the speedo reads or does the inaccuracy increase with the speed?

Main question is where can i get the gear or buffer to give me an accurate speedo, thanx.

edit:3.73's were an option on my car but being the only time in the generation run 3.73's were available with an auto, there should be no buffer or speedo gear from gm to match my gears and an electric speedo, only cable driven

The speedo will be totally inaccurate. I've driven a car that had 2.73s and then swapped to 3.55s without changing the speedo gear and the speedometer was totally wrong.

The best bet is to get a new buffer box. Try Dakota Digital. I know that Andris Skulte has a link to their site under the T56 swap page on his site, which I believe is www.skulte.com

I'm not sure if the gears swap or not. The gear shown doesn't look like the old style GM gears used in 4-speeds, but I'm not sure if they changed the design over the years.

Buffer box

I switched to a set of 3:73's from a 2:73. I bought a buffer box from Atrol for $145.00
