Dana rear end.
Does GM still sell a replacement (upgrade) Dana rear end for the third gen? I saw one listed in the GM Red Book back in 1996.

No, their remaining stock was sold off to SLP years ago. Service parts are still available however.

The Dana rear was a Dana 44, so parts for it are really easy to find because they are used in so many 4X4 applications. It's a fairly tough rear, but if you've got traction you'de be better off with a 12-bolt or 9" because the 44 uses a fairly small ring gear.
Yeah the 44 is a 8.5" ring gear which isn't too bad depending on the application and the toughest 44 is the one with 30 splines and 1 piece axles. A Ford 8.8 out of a 91-up Explorer isn't too bad of a choice either with it's 31 splines and 8.8" ring gear; however they are a c-clipped axle.
