How much HP can a 700r4 take?

How much HP can a 700r4 take?

I'm putting in a 383 and was wondering how much my 700r4 can take as far as torqu and HP?

The swap will have around 375-425 hp.

I have had no problems with the tranny and the previouse owner installed a B&M shift kit on it.

will it just explode when I start to drive it?


I tried seaching for the answer but found nothing

I would consider an upgrade ASAP. I have gone through 2 built up 700 R4's. Excuse me, make that three as of Friday night. I just lost 3rd and 4th gear in Valencia and had to drive all the way to Bakersfield in 2nd gear...... I'm running the equivalent of a ZZ4...

I blew my transmission last year in spring. I replaced it with a Pro-built 700r4 Street/Strip model, Dana rates them to 550 hp! I'm pretty happy with it. When my OEM trans went out I lost 4th gear, then follow'd shortly by 3rd, then 2nd and I barly made it home with 1st slipping pretty badly.

I am getting pissed off with my transmission shop... I am going ProBuilt all the way from now on. His fault... I have a few more cars to build, all need strong trannies, now Pro Built gets the business cause they will build me what I want.

I would go to Dana posthaste if you do want to upgrade your 700r4. Local tranny shops are a complete joke when it comes to rebuilding a 700r4 to "performance" specs. They'll usually charge $1200 or more to put in a standard, run of the mill, JC Whitney type rebuild kit. Dana will probably build you a good strong tranny for the same price or maybe even less than the local ripoff artists usually do. Even if your tranny is healthy at the moment, it probably won't live too long behind a stout 383.

For Ken V:

Do not under any circumstances go to Musicks Transmissions!!!!!!! I cannot overstate that in any way. They can't even rebuild a transmission back to stock correctly. They did my tranmission the first time and it lasted 3 miles before I lost first and third. They rebuilt it again and it never did work even as good as the stock unit I pulled out.

Ken at Kern Transmission tried to fix it and did a much better job. He also put in a lot of extra hours trying to get it to upshift at 5500 at full throttle where I wanted it and still get it to hold 4th gear at full throttle. If you will read my last post on the 4L80E upgrade thread, you will see that lunching my trans this time was probably more my fault that anything he did. He's also done some free stuff for me and cut me some real slack on prices for other things. I still need to go see him to let him know what I did to correct my around town shift points and get a reasonable full throttle shift. If not for the desire for the trans to hold forth gear at full throttle, He had it perfect once. Wish we could have obtained the Police full throttle upshift valve that is listed on this website. Unfortunately, 3 Way Chevrolet said they couldn't find anything under that part number on their computer.

I would seriously consider the Probuilt if it will handle the 500 HP. I should be putting out around 380HP when I get my new computer installed and dialed in.

That will help out if I stay local. FWIW 3Way scares me. When I saw that Chevy wants ~$455 for a fuel pump sender (no pump, just a sender/bracket), I realised that the manufacturer is out to get me

I am engaged as of last night, so I am in "transmission cash saving mode", meaning that I am setting aside some money here&there and want a good build the first time. Dana has been of much help in the past, so I have someone to go to if the trans doesn't suddenly drop dead en route to work, in which case I can now check with Kern Trans.

Thanks again, and now that tech has been disseminated I rescind my apology for hijacking the thread. haha j/k

I would say that a bone stock 700R4 can handle a bone stock TPI 305 for 100K with no problems..... Nothing more.......

About 625 - 650 HP is the limit on these, when eveything is done to them with the available upgrades as of now (including a small diameter torque converer). True, there are some who claim more, but if you cannot get over 100 - 150 quarter mile passes on them without any problems, and can do this several different units, then it could probably take more. As of now that HP stated above is it.

Why hasn't mine blown then? I've run a corrected 13.0 and it stil is alive with 206,000+ on the clock. Thanks to Dana for the 2 tenths I gained by going with his Corvette servo.

Thats good to hear, my 700 has 78k on it, still running healthy. I just put in a 350 looking around 350hp/350ft lbs. I've got 750$ in the bank, and the stock unit has to hold until I can afford a Probuilt.

I have an 88 Formula with 177k on the odo. Original trans. Still in pretty good shape. No complaints from me at least. The engine is still pretty much stock, 'cept for the free mods/addons..... I had to replace me B/W rearend about 10k miles ago though...... It developed a rather pronounced howl........ Could not hear the radio at 75 on the freeway.

Going to be time for LOTS of new parts soon. I suspect I am living on borrowed time for the tranny.......

Yeah but I wasn't even launching hard and didnt even do a burnout. 4th pass I shifted 2nd to 3rd and got nothing but rev limiter I've lost all faith in 700R4's in anything except a stock daily driver. I've spent less money on a built TH350 with a ATI race converter than it would cost just to buy a $1400 700R4 that may not even be able to handle my car when I spray it this spring

I had 130K on my stock '85 transmission behind the 305 and it was working fine. I only changed the trans to the beefed '89 unit because I new the 350 was going in a few months later.

CamZ28,

I put my first 383 in when my 700R4 had 140,000 miles on it. I had no problems until 190,000. It started slipping and that is when the T-56 went in. It was a stock tranny and I regularly changed the fluid on it. The only difference here is if your tranny is an 86 then it will not be quite as strong as the 89 tranny I had. They made some change to them that I can't remember for the life of me right now. I believe it had something to do with the valve body. Either case, the 700R4 is a strong tranny. It should handle the 383 unless you just abuse it all the time and don't change the fluid then it might go earlier.

My car has 160k on it now. I just put in a new ZZ4 engine last month (355HP). At this point it is still shifting by itself all the way to 4th, but the thing slips like a **** when I manually shift at WOT. In other words, when I change gears under power, it has to stay there and think about it for a second or so before it locks in the next gear. And in the middle of the shift the thing totally lets go and the revs hit the roof.

Maybe this is just the way a stock tranny reacts to so much torque.

BTW do trannies mated to weaker stock engines have less strength?? (I had a 5L TBI that sucked for HP).

I know if they are setup good they are pretty darned tough. Mine spins the BFG D/Rs hitting 3rd every time. Like I said earlier they higher (numerically) gear you are running the less torque the tranny has to handle. The 3.73s are pretty streetable with the o/d.

The tranny in my '88 Formula is like that... but that's why I just ordered a tranny from Pro-Built last week Now I have to wait for it to ship from Cali to Florida; but Dana said it would be shipped today so it should be there mid next week And then I shall be riding in style and unlimited torque once again, instead of in my mom's LHS

Hey now! The Chrysler LH cars don't do all that bad! I even have one for a daily driver. Many of the people here would like to have the HP to Displacement ratio that some of these things have! a 2.7 with 200 HP!!!!

Anyway, back to topic..... I strongly believe that Dana's tranny's, or any that are built to comparable spec's would easily hold what he claims. I'm sure that they would easily hold 50% more than he states, but not last as long.

My success story: 218,000+ miles on the clock of my 84 700R4, originally behind a LG4, now putting 250-300 HP to it for the past 4,000 or so miles. I get a flare on the 2-3 shift when it's cold, the shift points aren't consistent, and makes a "clicking" noise infirst gear, but at WOT, things are usually great. I KNOW it won't hold up when I get the rest of the stuff for the engine finished.

Hers is a '99 LHS with the 253hp 3.5L... it's got a lot better stereo than my car, but I want that unlimited torque kick in the *** when I floor it again

If your stock 700r4 is handling running at the track with few upgrades your doing well. Luck is on your side so far. I swapped my 700r4 out for a 700r4Raptor. It is built for racing. I wanted to keep a 700r4 because I use my car both as a daily driver and an occasional race or two at the track. Performance Automotive Transmission Center out of Louisiana built mine and I am more than happy with them. They also have a few other models that will handle well over 600hp. I will be putting my 400+ HP LS1 up to my 1982 just rebuilt 700R4. LOL I will let you guys know of the results.

All I have to say is WATCH OUT. I got ripped of by a guy selling 700-r4s in HOT ROD mag. He got me good for about a thousand all together. What happened was I blew my oem trany found his ad in hot rod mag. He was selling 700r4s for I think 750 to my door with warrenty. His shop was located a couple of hour up north in my state Michigan. So i ordered one and his son came to my house and droped it off cod of course and took my core. I put it in and it lasted a mounth I called him up and he told me hed fix it . Then rather than spend more money to get it pick up I met him half way to drop it off. I NEVER SAW HIM, THE 700-R4, OR MY CORE, OR MY 1000 BUCKS AGAIN. that was two years ago. Now ive got a badd *** 700r4. SO WATCH OUT FOR A FAT BASTARD SELLING SHI!TY TRANYS NAMED DAN BERGERON

I didnt buy a transmission from dana, I bought his rebuild kit. Its AMAZING the amount of detail that goes into one of his transmissions. I figured it was easy right? take out old parts, replace some seals, put in new parts. WRONG.

Half of the work involved, actually more than half, involves sanding and smoothing, cleaning and sanding, and more sanding. There are places EVERYWHERE inside the transmission that need to be perfectly flat or they tear up the seals or damage the hard parts. Ive spent over 16 hours just making sure the transmission components were perfectly flat smooth and polished and ready to go. knowing WHERE to sand is also a big deal...

So in the long run, the labor involved in making the transmission LAST under a high horsepower application is half the battle, just throwing some HD parts into the thing isnt going to do jack if you dont apply that level of detail to the transmission. Dana has been super nice and has given me more information than i could possibly ask for.

My car will not be high horsepower for a LOOOOONG time. If it can handle 400hp, I will be happy.
