If it's a clunking sound; and it's coming from the rear of the car.... Buy a set of gears while you are at it. You just broke some teeth on the ring or pinion gear. It will only get worse until you finally get stuck on the road.......

Yeah, I agree. It's most likely the ring and pinion. My car sounded like that before it sharpened the ring gear teeth to points and blew three teeth off the pinion gear.

Drive the car at a steady speed and steady throttle application. Then let off the gas and see if the noise goes away, or gets quieter. If it does then it is definately the ring and pinion. The sound is generated by too much backlash, which is a sign that the gears are about to take a dump. It's best to fix it before is grenades, because you'll be able to save a lot of parts that may be destroyed if the gears come apart. Plus the car will be undriveable.

Upgrading to 3.73s is a good idea, since all gears cost the same. Also, check the bearing surfaces on your axels while the rear is apart. If they are wasted replace them. Do the axel bearings and seals too.

its not clunking , is a constant low noise that i hear only when i drive it, i gotta have the radio down just to hear it. i hope to *** its not the rear, i just replaced that last year and i cant afford to do it again. it took 9 hours to do it and several hundred dollars
i think its comin from the right side somewhere to be honest.. but i dunno from rear or front.. yet.. i'll find out this friday when i get my dad to look at front wheels.

Then let off the gas and see if the noise goes away, or gets quieter. If it does then it is definately the ring and pinion.

thats the problem that Scares me, i frequently let off the gas and try to keep myself quiet as i can just i can try to pinpoint where that sound is coming from.
why would it keeep making that sound after i let off the accelerator??
is the rear end collapsing on me?
the driveshaft imploding??
if im at risk of dying in my own car i wanna know
someone please reply if U know anything about this sorta thing..

Could also be an axel bearing. Pull and check the axels like I said. The shafts are most likely wasted after this much time and require replacement.
