Driveline Question

Ok I have a 1982 Firebird TransAM with a 4 speed manual tranny which had low miles and is being parted, and a 1987 Firebird TransAM with a th700r4. I was just wondering if the driveline would be the same in both of them.

I am wanting to swap the rear out of the 82 into the 87, because it is a little bit lower gearing (3.08 vs 3.23) and likely has less miles on it. I am not sure of the miles on the 87, since I bought it used, but the odometer reads 173k now. The 82 has less than 50k on it, and I know that for a fact. I would really like to swap the driveline as well, if they are indeed the same.

Is there any way to know that they are the same, before I pull them?

the rear ends should be the same other than the parking brake cables and such, but for bolt in it should go right in. it should be a 10 bolt rear end with 26 spline axles, pretty sure.

not too sure about the 4 speed's, i would want to say u might be better off keeping the 700r4 or getting a t-5 setup.

why are you parting out the 82 t/a ??? damn.

i have one and i need an 82-84 t/a parts car, i need factory v-8 radiator and shroud and mechanical fan and all kinds of other stuff, fenders, console, 3/42 or 3.73 rear, etc etc.

is the car ruted junk or non repairable or something to cause it to be only good for parts ?

email me please

thanks

good luck

The rearend should bolt up just fine. The driveshaft from the 82 is probably longer than the 700r4 driveshaft. Anyone who is putting a th350 in their thirdgen would love to have the driveshaft from your 82!
