hesitating between 4th and 5th
My car seems to hesitate shifting between 4th and 5th gear now. It will shift down to 5th then back to 4th, and will kind of waver inbetween until I accelerate hard to push it into 5th. Is this my transmission going out? Is the pan just dirty? I checked the transmission fluid and it seems to be okay, but I'm not really experienced on cars by any means. I need to know if its costly, if so I'm not plunking in the money for a new conv. top.

4th and 5th gear? Do you have a stick? These cars weren't offered with a 5-speed auto.

Describe exactly what happens. Does the trans fail to shift into 4th gear? Under what circumstances does it fail to shift? What motor is in the car? Has the trans ever been serviced?

no it shifts into 4th but just after wavering a bit. Its really not a big deal right now, but i just wanted to know if it might be in the future. The car doesnt really jerk, it just kind of wavers like its running out of gas. But, once it hits 4th its fine. Between 3rd and 4th is the only time it happens, usually at a leisurely acceleration. And I dont believe the tranny has been serviced ever, but then again I bought it used. Thanks.

First thing's first. Service the trans. Do a fluid and filter change. Getting thr trans flushed is more expensive, but also a better way to change the fluid, because they get all the old fluid out.
Second, make sure your TV cable is adjusted properly. With the car off depress the tab on the TV cable housing and slide the adjuster all the way back into the housing. Release the tab. In one full smooth motion open the throttle until it hits the stop. You will hear the cable ratchet into position. Release the throttle and you're done. If the cable adjusts all the way out, or stays all the way in you may have a broken or stretched cable. They are cheap and easy to replace.
Another possible option is that the 3-4 clutch pack in the trans is starting to go bad. This requires major surgery to correct, so I'd try the other suggestions first, before having the trans rebuilt.
