TH350 if you're going to stay below 500 hp. I'm planning on being around the 700 hp range when the nitrous is added so that's why the TH400 for me.

TH400 is brutally strong. You can run stock internals with just a shift kit and a recalibrated governor up to 500-600 HP. The price is weight. The TH400 is heavy and has a lot of rotationla weight.
For a small block car I think a built TH350 is a better choice. It will allow a lot more power to get to the ground.

I have a TH350 that came with the car.I think it's the same length as the 700r4 and is a simple swap.I can remember someone telling me that a TH400 won't fit without modifying the floorpan but I'm not sure.Besides a TH350 can be built to take some big power.

You just need basic hand tools (sockets, wrenches, ect). Four jackstands and a jack.
You will need:
TH350 trans & converter
TH350 crossmember with torque arm mount
Maybe a shifter (you might be able to reuse the stock one, but I'm not sure of this)
Maybe a driveshaft (not sure if they're the same)
Don't forget to hook up the vaccum modulator and kickdown linkage.

i'm planing on adding a th350 to my aswell but theres 2 length tail housing on the th350 6" and a 9". the 6" tail housing would be found in the older camaros but ur stock drive shaft would have to be lenghten or u can grab a drive shaft from an older camaro, the the short th350 is shorter than the th 700r4, the long th350 with the 9" tail housing is found in the trucks and there the same length as the th 700r4 and ur can use ur stock drive shaft, but u'll need a flex plate with dual bolt pattern so u canbolt in the th350 converter, theres also a trans swap kit from hurst to swap a th 350 into any 82 -92 f-body and u still can keep ur stock torque arm, for the shift i would suggest goin with b&m megashifter universal model cuz this way it bolt rigth into place of the stock sifter location with lil mod to the stock plastic pc, so i think the best way to go is with the long th350 9" tail housing, so you dont have to mod ur drive shaft, heres some parts number for those parts
B&M Flexplate (55-85 sbc 153 tooth) BMM-20237 for 2 pc rear main seal
B&M Flexplate (86-94 sbc 153 tooth) BMM-20238 for 1 pc real seal
Hurst th-350 trans swap kit (82-92 f-bodys) #5500001
B&M Megashifter universal model (gm th350) # 80690
So i hope this helps u out and keep me posted on how things come along.

the parasitic loss and the extra 40lbs are more than enough reason to keep me from going to a 400, the 350 can be built to take almost anything a 400 can, after that your stuck with a powerglide.
