is posi worth it?

i've been considering adding clutch-type posi to my 2.73's for a long time, mainly because i simply hate open rear-ends (no demented pun intended ). the car is a daily driver during the spring, fall and summer, and retains the 2.73's (and the 305 for that matter, lol) because i like to keep the gas mileage high. i would imagine that posi would effect my MPG by the principle of how it works, is this a correct assumption? also, not gonna be getting more $$$ than usual any time soon, so i'm probably gonna keep the same main setup for a while. the only mods i'm considering in the near future is true dual exhaust, and lightweight drivetrain stuff (flexplate, driveshaft). my setup is in my sig. will the posi make much of a performance difference with my setup? also, will clutch-type posi effect handling at all? with a limited budget and no big mods anytime soon, is getting the posi worth it in performance gains? thanks

Posi shouldn't affect your MPG. I imagine you think since it delivers power to both wheels instead of just the one with the least traction, that it will take mor epower ot move the car. It woudl be true if you raced form every stoplight, but as long as it isn't beaten up everyday and both wheels are forced to spin all the time, your gas mileage will be effected negligibly (see: not enough to notice). As far a sperformance, if you are having trouble getting traction off the line, then yes, it is a valuable add on.

The only handling problem you should be concerned about is fast cornering and bad weather. If you make a turn with your foot on the gas, and the car shifts into a higher gear, the rear end will come out if you are nto careful. Also, after making a turn onto a road you plan to "open up" on, be sure to get the car straight before hitting the gas, otherwise you are going to go in every direction BUT straight.

It's a good add-on, I think you will appreciate it.

It makes driving around a corner more fun.

Hey bandit, I barely goosed the throttle on my TPI and went sideways, can your carb do that?

(Bandit and I are friends, just one of us hates FI and loves carbs, and the other loves FI and hates carbs, so we go at it like a cat and dog about it. No hate either way. )

Yup... but I usually prefer to travel in a straight line unless it is intended to impress the ladies.

One of the best damn mods I've ever done was a posi and 3.42's. The 3.42's actually IMPROVED my mileage because the engine is under less strain.

There's 2 things a daily driver has to have, posi and rear-defrost. Unfortunately, I'm doing everything else first, like wonderbar, stb, 350, tpi, posi, 3.42's ... etc. first
