I have a 91 GTA with a 700R4 in it. The car has 160000 on it (motor only has about 1200 on it).

My question is, how long does a 700R4 usually last before needing to be rebuilt. I bought the car in December 03 and the guy told me that the car was completely stock, so I am guessing that the tranny has never been rebuilt.

Also, what are some signs of a torque convertor that is going bad? Whether it has anything to do with it or not, I don't know, but when I was coming home today I would give it gas and the speed would continue increasing but the tach would not move past 2200 RPM.

One, more question, what could be some possibilities as to why my car shifts at 2000 RPM in every gear and does not ever go past about 2500-3000 RPMs?

Thanks in advance for the help.

John

depends on how hard it was driven and a bunch of other factors. my 86 had 140 on the clock when i sold it and the trans was good. my 90 has 74000 and i just had to replace the trans cuz the 3-4 clutch pack blew.

I don't know how hard the car was driven before i got it, but I have intentions of racing it if not every weekend, probably every other weekend.

i bought my T/A with 106,000 miles on it and the former owner thought it had a shift kit in it because it would shift into 2nd like crazy and chirp the tires. I of course drove it like it was meant to be driven and proceeded to blow the tranny about a week afterward, almost got myself stranded halfway to school, 300 miles away. sucked.
