auto tranny problems
the past couple days my transmission's been acting up.. I haven't checked the fluid level yet, but I've never had fluid problems before.. I'll check it tomorrow though, but here's my problem..
when accellerating it acts normal.. runs through the gears fine, except it won't shift from second to third when I have it full throttle, which isn't a big problem cause I can just let off a little and it'll shift, but still, it's not supposed to do that.. also, when I manually downshift it, it doesn't put it in the gear unless I press the gas.. so if I were to try to slow down by downshifting it wouldn't do a damn thing.. I know autos aren't really made to do that, but I don't care, I just wanna know what's wrong, so don't tell me to stop manually shifting. :P hehe.. along the same lines, if I have it in say 2nd gear (or any gear), and run it up (to any rpm) if I let off the gas it just drops like it's in neutral.. then if I press the gas again, it jumps right back up like it went back into gear..
it's a 1991 700r4 with 207k miles with no rebuilds that I know of and no mods... thanks for any info.

Trans is on it's way out. The clutch packs are slipping under WOT. This is a very common problem. Eventually you will be left with only low and reverse. Start shopping for a rebuild or new trans so you're ready. It's only going to get worse.

nah, I'll be shopping for a new car instead.. the car's wrecked, totalled, blown the rear end once already, engine's got 207k on NO rebuilds, interior kinda sucks, body sucks, I'm surprised it runs anymore
.. but it's done me good.. lasted me over 6 years so far and almost 100k miles of hard driving.. it might become some kind of project later on though.. I don't have money for it right now..
is the tranny not downshifting when put manually into a lower gear part of the clutch packs slipping too?

My advice would be to part it out while the trans, engine, rear are still serviceable. You can make some serious green on eBay doing it. It's a bit time intensive, but you'll easily get a couple grand worth of parts out of it.
The downshift issue is due to the clutch packs too. I had the exact same problem and tried everything to overcome it. I even had tranny experts tell me that my TV cable wasn't adjusted properly. The bottom line is that the trans is going. I found it out the hard way. Eventually I was left with no WOT upshift. All it had was 1st gear. It ran a 15.7 like that, even with lifting before each shift and blipping the throttle to get the next gear before hammering it again. I just swapped it for a T56 and I'm much happier.

well, if I can find another car cheap enough, then I might go that route.. but I have no second car, so I can't just take it off the road yet..
