T56 Lifespan

Hey yall, new member here. What's up??

I'm thinking about doing the T56 swap this summer, should I just grab a tranny from a boneyard? Or a remanufactured one? About how many miles do they handle before needing a rebuild (with some mild 'abuse' )?

Thanks for any help!

Hehe . . . Funny you should ask that. Well my buddy has a '00 SS and hes on his 3rd T-56 transmission. First 2 times it went out is because he put in a quality racing clutch and for some reason the clutch wouldn't release fast enough. So right now Don Massy Cadillac is doing warrant work and giving him a new T-56. And it's not that he can't drive it's just the clutch.

There have been lots of problems with the LS1 stlye T56's. The earlier LT1 style tranny's are much better.

You are going to need an LT1 anyways to bolt up to your Gen I block. The LS1's problems have come from the fact that the imput shaft is not as strong. Don't worry. You can beat the living hell out of it with your 305 and will not have any problems.

Yeah, i'll be getting a 94-97 lt1 t56. But it won't see my 305, i've got a 355 almost ready to put in, prolly with a carb unless i decide to keep the tbi. I'm just wondering if i get a tranny with 50k-70k some-odd miles, how long will it hold up before needing a rebuild?

My girlfriend has 290,000 miles on her T56 ... just changes clutches every 70K or so. YMMV.
