whining noise that changes with speed
O K I know that noise problems are hard to troubleshoot as they could be all kinds of things. I'll try to explain this as clear as possible. Recently I have noticed a whining noise when the car is moving. The engine is perfectly O K. I can rev it to high rpms and stuff and there are no unusual noises. When the car starts moving it starts in the background and as speed is increased the sound increases in pitch. At high speeds it is so distintice that it interferes with the music coiming out of the stereo. It is continuos and seems consistent as if it was a noise coming out of gears as they increase in their rotation. Could there be a problem in my tranny, universal joint or rear differential? I recently added an additive to my transmission fluid with the hope of stopping a leak. It was ATF sealer or something like it. Could this have anything to do with it?. I am afraid to drive my car because I think I may be destroying the tranny or any other major and expensive component. Thanks.

my first guess would be tires, then something i nthe rear, pull the axles and cover and check bearings. not very likly it's the trans. might help if you could figure out which end or side the noise is on.

When I rebuilt my rear axel I got a whir, and its because my gears do not exactly mesh right.... Oddly enough its only at a constant speed and when I excelerate or decelerate it goes away. Contacted Richmond (I bought their gears) and the guy said it was not uncommon, but apparently I got them amazingly close.
You mentoned the radio, have you tried to turn off the radio, could it be from the altinator causing interferance? ( I got that it does not do it in park )

I had this problem and it ended up being the tailshaft bushing in the transmission. Simple fix if you find someone with the tool. The part is $5 bucks..it's the same for auto's and sticks.
Sorry to bump an old thread... Can anyone explain this bushing thing a bit better?
I have the same screetching problem.. it's hard to explain, really.. The car was fine, went over a friend's house, parked... later on, when going home the car was making horrible noises... Definitely a metal noise. At first it SEEMED like the exhaust was dragging on the ground, but it wasn't...
I don't know where it was coming from, I guess I'll need to move forward and back and see if my dad can see where it's coming from. My car has a horrible Transmission leak, somewhere. When we first got it, it would only leak after awhile of sitting... then it would stop. It recently started doing it again, and it leaks pretty much any fluid I put in it (until it's under the "1 pint" mark, according to the dipstick.. hardly any fluid even on the stick)
Can I also get some more info on the additive the guy in the first post mentioned? Do you think this might work for me?
Oh-- car is automatic. 1987 IROC-Z, 350TPI
Thanks.
