Picking the right thirdgen

Okay, I have an 88 iroc-z, but I am deciding on selling it. I have too much into it for what I want to do. Anyway, that will be sold, and my next project is a blower. Engine will be streetable, with moderate drag use, but I am not that serious about getting the extra tenth of a second.

I am going to be on the hunt for old beat up thirdgens that I can rebuild with my blower setup in mind. The engine should not push more than 550hp 6-6.5k, and that will be on rare occasion that the car sees anything near those numbers.

What would be the ideal model thirdgen for doing this. I will obviously want a manual, 700r is too much money to make it handle the blower setup, and I am not against rebuilding a manual entirely.

Time for a completely new rear? Seems to be the norm to just say Ford 9" rear whenever someone puts a 500+ engine in one of these.

I am a bit convoluted with all the different ways this could go. I suppose what I am asking is if you were building this, what model ( would like to keep it camaro) or specific year should I be looking for at the boneyards and classifieds?

Mike

I would use a 91-92 and use a 6-speed to handle the horses. They have electronic speedometers that can be converted to your 6-speed with a converter. Just a suggestion.

Was going to go with a 671, but I have been doing a little more research of late and that may turn into a 144.
