how to lockup converter w/ toggle switch

how do i get the torque converter to lock up without having a computer. i have a 700r4 thats going in a 73 chevy truck and i have heard you can set it up to a toggle switch and also have it tied into the brake light switch. can you explain to me when the torque converter need to lockup and what makes them burn up. also how do i wire the trans up to lock up with the toggle switch and brake lights. thanks
