t56 clunking

If I let the clutch pedal up kinda quick or go over a bump while my foot is off the gas (no load on trans) there's a clunk coming from the tranny. I guess it sounds like a tranny mount but I had the car up on a lift and had my friend work the clutch so it would make the noise and the tailshaft housing didn't look like it was jumping around too much, seems to be coming from inside the trans. The gears also grind sometimes if I shift fast at WOT but I think that's just the synchros.

It sounds like it could be the pilot bearing. My friend had a similiar problem on his 98 cobra. We pulled the whole trans out, thinking the synchros were bad, only to find a trashed pilot bearing. I'm not sure what the T56 bearing looks like, but ford uses a roller bearing with a plastic cage. The cage had fallen apart and let the rollers fall out.

The stock T56 pilot is a bronze bushing, exactly like all other GM pilot bearings before it. I prefer the roller style bearing, because they seem to last longer. Lakewood and GM both sell them.

I used a bronze bushing, it only has a few thousand miles on it. I wouldn't expect it to fail so soon.

No, me either. Unless the alignment of the bellhousing is off. Given the unique nature of the T56 bellhousing I couldn't even imagine how to check it (no round register bore).

i have the same thing.... but i know its my pilot bearing...

i got the bearing and the bushing... chose to put the bearing in, it had a burr on the edge that i didnt notice..... it wouldnt go in all the way.... so i smacked the crap out of it.. ( i really dont care if the 305 goes, the 400 is 98% ready )
then saw the burr, got the bearing in in... it all aligned right with the tool, and its probly fine, but it makes a slight whirrl if i rev with the clutch in somtimes, and does that lil clunk.

i'll just live with it that way until the 400 goes in
