How do I tell the what gears

How do I tell the what gears and spline I have on my 89 RS coupe?

Is there a code on my vehicle sticker on the door?

pull the cover and count teeth ot look for the ratio stamped on the gear set, same with axles, pull one and count splines. 89 was transition year. posting on the correct forum helps too.

Check the RPOs in the center console. Should be GU#

Transmission: Pro-Built 700r4 w/ 3400 converter
Axle/Gears: 10 bolt w/ 3.42 gears
I have heard that if you take the car, put it in your 1:1 gear, which is 3rd in the A4, and run it at 75 mph, then the rpm should be close to what gear you have. I know it works in my buddies 99 WS6 6 speed, dead on. Its a little more difficult in an auto, caues of converter slippage. Mine was about 100 rpm lower than the 3420 I should have seen.

If his car is anything like mine, it won't get you real close. Mine has had a couple of trans swaps, since I got it and I know know the rear was rebuilt before I had it. From calculating mine by rpm and tire diameter and mph going, I thought I had 3.73s. Once I took it apart found out I had 3.42s. That's how far off my speedo is. Now after pacing my wife I know it's 5mph off at 75.
