10 Bolt axle end play, what is normal?

When my 91 Camaro is on the jack, and I pull, and push in, and out on the rear wheel there is some play. What is concidered a normal amount of movement. It is a low milage car and play has always been there even right after getting it back from the drivetrain store with a new gear and set up. I know the C-clip on the end of the axle holds it all together. Is there a way to shim or adjust for the slop?

In and out movement is normal w/ c-clips, up and down movement = bad bearings

I read somewhere (but have no experience) that the C-clips can be reversed/turned over to eliminate a bit of play.
