3.73 gear id markings and measurment?

I bought what was labeled as a 3.73 gear set at a swap meet today, mainly 'cause it was cheap as hell and I'm impulsive, but now I'm doubting that it's a 10 bolt 3.73 set-up. The ring gear has "373" "YLDA" "02-45" and a "V" There are 12 holes in the back. The pinion gear has "273" "3W7" "CA" "M" "3N" (underlined) and a "V". What the hell do I have here? If I were to measure them, what would I use? overall? the interior hole? Any help (or pictures of the real thing) would be appreciated.

Count the teeth. Count the # of ring gear teeth, and divide that by the # of teeth on the pinion. I did an install on a set of 3.73s yesterday, and it was 41 ring gear/11 pinion gear teeth which is 3.727 or 3.73...

It's 41/15, or 2.73. But it just doesn't look right, the pinion head seems much larger than it should be. I think I may have mis-matched pieces, they don't seem to mesh the way they should. How can I tell the size of the ring gear? What should I measure? It's in perfect shape, and if I can use it I'll just order a 11 tooth pinion gear-

You can't use a 2.73 ring with a 3.73 pinion; there's more differences than just the number of teeth. The thickness, for instance.

10-bolt ring gears have ..... 10 bolts. If you have a ring gear with 12 bolts, it's ..... (get ready for a surprise!!!) a 12-bolt one.

Sounds like you have a bunch of garbage. Basically, you got scammed; unloaded a steaming useless pile of crap on an unsuspecting victim.

Sounds like RB is right. Looks like you will have to get a new SET of gears. Gears come in sets for a reason, b/c they are matched at the factory w/ each other, so getting a new pinion, or a new ring gear to go w/ what you have will not be a good idea.

Ah-crappity-crap-crap. This is basically what I had figgered out already, but I was hoping for someone to pipe up and tell me I got a great deal. I guess this sort of explains why the guy was so adamant about ripping the tags off it before handing it to me, and why, when I asked him about it, he said it was a friends and he was selling it for him. hey, a $30.00 learning experiance isn't all that bad. Now I gots me some nice paperweights. crap.
