From 2.73 to 3.42
I'm taking my car out of storage on wednesday (april 14) and im taking it straight to the shop to beef up the rearend. I want to put some new and stronger gears in the rearend but im debating on what gears to get..Can anyone help me? I wanted to get 3.42 but i heard you wont notice much diff between the 2.73 and 3.42 in a SOTP feel. I really need some advice on what to get (3.42, 3.73) but i dont want to sacrifice huge amounts in the gas mileage department since the prices of gas are going nowhere but up! Last thing, which are the best brands of gears to go with that wont make loud noises or sound like they grind, etc.
Thanks in advance guys and girls

I have a '91 GTA with a 305. I changed my gears from 2.73 to 3.42. I lost maybe 1-2 mpg. The difference in acceleration was WAY better! I could actually spin my tires out of the hole!!
This is my opinion only, but, I would go for the 3.73's. Reason is this. if you are going to go thru the $ and the trouble, go for the gold. Not much $ more. You have to get a series 3 carrier anyway!!
As for the brand, if you are not putting huge hp to the car, as long as the gears are properly aligned, I'm sure any brand will do. I have "no names" and I have put 6000 miles on mine (raced it 2 times last summer) with no problems.
Make sure they are POSI!!!!!!!

Don't get Richmond if you don't want it to whine. I have motives and am happy with them. What plans do you have for the car and what trap speed are you expecting? Both will make a nice SOTP improvement.

well im kind of rebuilding (if u wanna call it that) my car 1 piece a year. Last year I rebuilt the tranny, this year the rearend, and next year im gonna do the engine..so im wondering what kind of gears would be worth my time. As far as the engine goes, im lookin to make around 450hp with prolly a range of 3000-6500 rpm if possible. I want something strong but nothing that will take my top speed to a grand total of around 105mph if u know what i mean. I dunno, im just confused right now

top speed
With the 2.73's, i used to have a top speed of about 140-145mph. Now with the 3.42's, about 115mph.

the real top speed limiter is hp.if you change to lower gears you might lose some top speed if you leave the motor stock.how many guys@ the track runnin 4.10, 4.56s and go way over 115. just match your rear to what mods you wanna do to the motor
