.059" Pinion Shim!?!?!

I am in the middle of setting up a Moser 12 bolt with Richmond 3.73's.Pinion checking depth is 2.828 as per Richmond specs on the pinion. When I get the pinion to set at this depth of 2.828 I have a total of 4 shims on it totalling .059"?!?I have set up factory rears (10/12 bolts) with factory or Richmond gears and usually never need more than a .035" shim...one rear needed a .037"..that was the biggest I have used till this?!I am just curious if anyone has ever ran into such a large pinion shim requirement? Not really worried about it till I see what gear pattern is..and if it is good and that is what the gears require to set it up with a .059" shim stack so be it...more of a curiousity concern.

I rebuild axles all the time at my work, that doesn't seem abnormal. Dwayne88IROC's 9bolt took a .094 shim to get a good pattern. It's just all the inconsistencies in the machining of the housings. If the pattern looks good it's fine.

Thanks for the replies..like I said I have built only factory cased rears (8 total) up till this Moser unit (9th to date)..so it could be the Moser unit is manufactured differently..i.e different dimensions.I will wait to see what gear pattern reveals before I start the process over..like I said pinion depth is on spec as per Richmond..so we will see.I will post back when the results are found.

I do this type of work for a living. The pinion shim shouldn't be more than .050. I've set up several Moser 12-bolts which usually require .30 on the average
