how bad is this killing performance?

the previous owner of my camaro, swapped from a v6 5-speed to a v8 auto. he got the engine from a blazer(305 4bbl) and it seems that he also put the blazer tranny in the camaro.

its a 3 speed (i am pretty sure)and the gears are really wide.

how much is this slowing the car down from say a 700r4?

i have started searching for a T5, and since the previous owner left the clutch pedal and manual shifter console and boot in the car, i figure it should be a relatively easy swap to a standard?

it doesn't seem like the blazer trans fit the camaro very good either, because i can hear a humming on the highway coming from the tranny. also their is no auto shifter hooked up to it, and the way i change gears is by push/pulling the shifter cable through the ash tray with a set of vice grips....needless to say, a sloppy job was done on the swap.

here a pic of my automatics interior for your amusment...

There's not a huge difference between a cars 1/4 mile time with a 700-R4 or a TH400 for example. You have a short first gear with a 700, but the % rpm drop from 1-2 and 2-3 is greater in a 700 than another tranny, so you gain one thing and lose another. I'd rather have 200-4R ratios than 700-R4 ratios myself.

Nice steering wheel.

Yeah, I'd swap back to manual.

yeah i think the steering wheel looks alot better than the camaro one.

so this car would run pretty much the same 1/4 mile as if it had a 700r4? but the t5(assuming i can drive it good) should be quicker?

i was watching popular hotroding TV today, and the guys had a muncie, a t56, and a t5 laid on the table. the t5 never had a bellhousing but just the transmission part of it seemed to be much smaller than the transmission part of the muncie/t56...how much lighter is the t5 than a 700r4 roughly?
