i have just put a 305 and 5 speed from an 85 trans am into my 86 firebird (was orinally v6 with automatic) i need to know how to get the speedo to work. the 5 speed has a cable and the car needs a vss . i tried the cluster with the cable driven speedo in the car but the gauges and dash lights dont work. can i use a vss from another year or model, if so what will work. or can i change the wiring to the cluster to make the 85 cluster work.

You need the driven speedo gear & sleeve for an 86-up Firebird or 90-92 Camaro (with elec. speedo.) Then plug that into the original VSS wiring.

 

And it has to be for (or from) a T5; the ones for the autos are much bigger.

 

thanks, i ordered one for a 90 firedbird with a 5 speed but it was wrong. there are 3 different ones theat are listed for the 5 speed, how can i know which one will fit. does anyone have the gm part number??
