axle shaft differents

I have recently learned that there are 2 different part numbers for the axle shafts used on 3rd gens, one for the disc brake rear, and one for the drum rear.

My question is, what are different between the two?

Can the shafts out of a drum rear, work in a disc rear?

The drum rear axles are still available from GM, and the disc axles are discontinued.

I'm only concerned with the 7.5 rear, NOT the aussie 9 bolt.

Thanks, and I only really need some hard facts on this, as I have already played the guessing game with my dealership parts dept. and have gotten nowhere.

the spline counts changed in 89, either 26 or 28 depending on year. the flange was differant sized for drum and disk.

The flange is machined for the disks so they sit flat i believe.

BTW don't waste your money on some GM axels for 240 bucks a piece... pick up a pair for 300 and chaneg from superior axels and gears...

yeah but what's the point of wasting time with the search feature when you can just post a question, that's been ask before.
