which tranny for project, 700r4 or th350/400?

In 2 months Im going to be enrolling in college and my daily driver is gonna become a Pro-Touring T/A, hopefully. Im going to put either a 383 or a 406 it to reach my 400+rwhp goal. I need to know if rebuilding my 700r4 is worth it or not, or go and grab something stronger for the same price. any ideas?

i'd say TH350 if you're going with a 400+ hp at the wheels. of course i'm sure others will disagree.

A stock 700R4 definately won't handle it.. One with the proper upgrades and the torque drive package should be able to though.. If you don't want to go that route, I'd choose a TH400..

cool....how are TH300/400's with gas mileage? would i be able to go on highway cruises or on a track no problems with it? rear gears will be either 3.55s or 3.73.d if that helps. also, does an 88 GTA have an elec speedometer? I saw something about a conversion piece needed if it is.

Its not too bad to get around the elec. speedo. I believe you could find another car with a th350 and electric speedo and take the whole tailshaft. That would work I would think. Since you are looking at that much horsepower, I'm guessing the torque arm isnt an issue, you will be going aftermarket. I say go with the th350. The 400 may be stronger, but Iwas always under the impression that the 400 didnt have as good of a first gear ratio. Someone step in and tell me if I'm wrong though, as I am no trans expert.
