First thing to check is loose flexplate to torque converter bolts. Get the car up in the air, remove 4 bolts for the cover, check the 3 converter bolts. You'd be surprised how often it happens, especially if anything has been done to the car.

It could also be the torque converter itself.

I've had both happen to me, although the converter tended to be quiet at idle and rattled/shook at higher RPMs.

Could you go into a little more detail of what type of knocking you were getting from it. Reason I ask is before I swapped to a T5, I had a knock similar to a rod knock at a tad over 3k from time to time yet with the same engine and the T5 no noise at all. Nothing was loose and I was figuring it might be the tq converter going but Ive never heard one go bad in that manor.

A rattling that would build up and diminish in a cyclic fashion with a period of a couple of seconds. Would shake the entire car. Under power, it would tend to go to a steady shake. The shaking was so bad, it loosened up the bell housing bolts.

I never found out exactly what was wrong with it, but the donor car had been rear ended hard, and I suspect it was damaged internally in that incident. When I did the mods, I got a remanufactured higher stall converter and traded it in.
