aquiring posi
hello all;
Next week i am going to a swap meet in hopes of buying a 10 bolt posi rear end. i currently have a 3.42 open (26 spline) and would like the same ratio in posi. I know the best way to check these things is to pull the cover and count the teeth and so on, but since this is at a swap meet, i probably won't be able to do this. Any ideas on how to check ( i know it won't' be 100% accurate, but were RPO's stamped on these things or anything?) I don't need disk brakes either.
Alternatively i guess i could get a posi carrier and install it but i'm not sure if i need 28 spline axles and such, and i thought that just buying a used rear end complete will be cheaper and easier.
Any suggestions on what to look for when buying the rear end??
Thanks; Kyle

There was a axel code stamped on the passenger side tube but you never can tell if the internals are original or not.
If you hold the pinon flange and spin one axel the other axel should spin the same direction. If it spins the oposite dirrection you dont have a posi.
If you mark both the pinon and axel you can get an aproximation on the ratio by counting the turns of each. About 3.5 turns of the pinon should get 1 turn on the axel for the 3.42 your looking for.

best thing to do would be get a slp take off and up grae to 28 spline axles. if your set of keeping 26 spline buy a posi carrier and swap the ring gear over, should be easier and cheaper. someone at a swap meet selling a rear as posi will have the cover off or would remove it for you.
