4th gen rear fitting in 3rd gen body?

Will a 4th gen rear end fit right up in a third gen body? I heard it sticks out further on the sides then a thirdgen but other wise fits. This true? Also, will I need 4th gen lower control arms, or anythign to convert it? Thanks.

Yes it is a direct bolt-in except for the wheels. But the wheels do fit they just stickout a little further.

yes the shocks, springs, lower control arms, and panhard bar should be the same.

Now, with a 4th gen rear end, I'll probably need a 4th gen brake booster and master cylinder (because i'm going form drum brakes). Will I also need new brake lines and parking brake lines? I was just really wondering if I could cut the current lines on there, if they're useless.

I went from a 3rd gen drum rear to a 4th gen disc rear and I am using the stock 3rd gen master cylinder...The rear brake lines and the parking brake are the only things you'll need to modify when swapping to a 4th gen rear - I've heard that the later 4th gen rears make it easier to use the 3rd gen parking brake setup...

i have to disagree. I got brand new rear e-brake cables, and they're too short. I have to re-run the whole damn cable from front to back. but that's the onlyy thinig that doesn't work. the brake lines even screw right in to the hose in the back. it all fits, and bolts right in. and the difference is great. my pads are shot and the rear rotors are chewed up... and it STILL tops better than my drums. and the posi is REALLY nice. have fun, find a good geaqr ratio. if you want a rear end, i can get you one for 230 plus shipping in various gear ratios. good luck.

I've got a rear out of an 02 TA, and everything literally bolts right up. As far as the e-brake cables, you will need to use cables for an 89-92 car with the PBR rear disc brakes. The earlier disc and all year drum cables were different. I found a pair of new e-brake cables for a 91 Z28 from AutoZone for $32 for the pair. They work well. The wheels will stick out a little further depending on the 4th gen rear. The 93-97 rears are roughly 4" wider than the 3rd gen, and the 98+ are shorter at just under 3.5" wider. Some like the look of the 3rd gen wheels out a little further, but stay away from the trailer park look and put the correct 4th gen wheels on it.

I went from a rear drum setup to the 4th gen rear disc setup with no changes to either my master cylinder or combination (proportioning valve). The rears discs work great. You will need the proper lines from the calipers to the t-fitting at the rear. You can keep everything factory from that fitting forward.

BTW - all of this info could be found with a search. This topic has been done over and over, and all details have been addressed.

sounds like you got my same rear. mine is a 97 T/A rear. thanks for the part ID... I'm gonna rip off my cables, go buy the right ones, and then return the ones i got. wish i had been told that when i asked. I'm starting to think maybe we should do like some of the other forums on the board, and do an FAQ sticky. anybody game?

Just a question how much are you guys getting your 4th gen rears for. I have found them for $400-800, here locally at the boneyard. That seems like a lot to me.

honestly, that is a lot. I can get you one for $230. the tricky part is the gear ratio. but that's the same price whether you get the LCA's, panhard bar, shocks, and sway bar, or if i just pull you the rear bare and give it to you. yards are pretty expensive around here too, which is why i'm glad i have the contacts i do for certain things.

Do a search. There have been several threads that I've gone into detail what everything cost.

Look over at CamaroZ28.com or better yet, LS1.com A low mileage 3.23 posi rear with disc brakes is quite common for a few hundred, and you even see a few 3.42 Torsen rears with brakes for just a tad more. Anything over $500 is crazy, even if it has the popular 3.42, posi, and discs.
