Urgent Need Help

okay doing a trans swap tmw, have the 700 thats going in the car so figured id replace the filter. Take off the pan pop off the old filter everythings going fine. Go to pop the new filter in and it goes in. Try to put the pan back on and the filter is in the way so the filter isnt in far enough. Cant get the filter in any farther without using a sledge hammer so i figure ill pull the new filter out and try to figure out whats what. Pull out the filter and i hear a crack. The new filter broke as i was pulling it out (it came out intact just with a crack in it) and it left the seal behind. So the seal is stuck in the hole i cant get the seal out for the life of me. How do i get the seal out and any ideas as to why in the hell the new filter wouldnt go in all the way? I put tranny fluid on the seal like i was supposed to maybe i didnt use enough. Either way i need help im freaking out

update

Okay heres the deal. When the old filter came out there was 1 seal attached to it. Put the new one in and when i tried to pull the new one out it got stuck in there. So i finally got the new seal pulled out however there was a second seal inside the transmission of the exact same kind. Is there supposed to be a second seal in there?

ok. the reason yo couldn't get the old filter in maybe have ben a second seal. what i'm trying to figure out is, do you know if this tranny has been serviced before? did it work just fine? the reason i'm asking, is that there shouldn't be 2 seals in there. just one that goes around the neck of the filter, and then you slide it all in as one, and yeah, you may need to tap it in with a rubber mallet (read: NOT SLEDGEHAMMER).

so if this tranny has been serviced before, and you've never seen it work, you may have scored a tranny that may have been worked on by a goofball with more tools than brain cells. be careful, take your time. this is a tranny, so you can't be too careful.

This is a tranny that i picked up off a buddy and its been just sitting in his garage for two years not being used but it ran when it came out of his car.

It doesnt look like theres supposed to be more then one seal but there was definitly a second one in there. I'm more just wondering how they got the tranny pan on last time but maybe they just said no it fits and just tightened down all the bolts until it sealed? Either way looks like im just going to go get a new filter kit and stick it in with the only seal thats supposed to be there. Thanks for the reply i just kind of freaked out. Hope i can find somewhere that has one on hand first thing tommorow otherwise looks like the tranny swap might have to be put on hold for another week need access to my friends tools and hes only around on the weekend. thx again for the quick reply

no problem. **** happens, and sometimes, it scares you half to death if you werren't expecting it. kinda like when somebody let a car down on my roll-a-round cart.

good luck. if you need any other help, come find us. you should be able to go to auto zone or advance and snag a kit for about 10 bucks. or are all of the stores around you mom and pop joints that close at 4?

it was 4:30 when i finally had everything figured out and i know the closest store (canadian tire) closes at 5 and they had to order this part in for me and theres no way theyll be able to order it for next day over the weekend. I'm going to hit up the GM dealership tmw and hopefully theyll have it in stock if not theres napa and a couple others i can check, and it cost me 17 canadian the first time i bought it so ya about 10 american lol. Ugh hopefully the rest of my tranny swap goes okay.
