shifting the t56

whats the best way to shift the t56 when racing. can you just slam the gear into the next with out touching the clutch? how strong are the viper t56`s? i already blew up a 700r4 the first day i had it

NO you gotta cluch but the way i do it when i race is pull on the shfter as you start to cluch and start to relese the cluch as you start to hit the gear you get the firmest shifts that way

Youll get a feel for it. Never driven the f-body ones but the viper one is quick but you cant just hammer it into the next gear.

when we went to vegas for new years 2004 we rented a viper and he drove it. he was surprised at how close the shifts are as compared to a super t 10. But he got the hang of it after about 100 miles.

I have heard of them but they are really expensive. I would get a used on and put the 700 bucks into it that make it indestructable.

just because you're being quick, doesnt mean you have to be forceful.

if the trans doesnt want to go into the next gear, theres a REASON for that.

when drag racing, i do a very quick push of the clutch as i shift, enough to get it in the next gear. i also release extremely quick, but SMOOTH... this makes it so i dont break them loose on the 1-2 shift and spin halfway down the track.

when road racing, i shift the same, but with even more emphisis on being smooth. on the downshift i usually only clutch enough to bearly disengage, then i match revs as its slipping in the next lower gear... done right, its absolutely smooth and you feel like you accomplished somthing.. done wrong, the rearend jerks and you look like you just got a manual trans yesterday. lol

I hope you aren't full throttle shifting that poor manual either, you're going to end up HAVING to buy another tranny.
however, if you want to just slam it into gear get an automatic 700R4 build the tranny so its indestructible and throw a B&M shift kit on it so you can just ratchet into the next gear.

Actually the t56 is one of the only trannys that can put up with such abuse. It is amazing what these things can take. GMHTP has a car running 9's with a T56 and only a viper main shaft added.
