Is this a problem? tranny noise and clunk
Ok,
I was checking things over cause Ive been hearing and feeling a bad clunking noise when putting into gear and going from reverse to drive.
I raised the rearend and started the car and put it into gear, my passenger tire spins under load but my drivers tires doesnt not until a give it some gas. I can alomost hold it from turning, Is that because of the SLP torsen Posi unit? normal?
I was checking to see if my U-joints were bad but found them to be tight. I guess?
Now, I had my wife sit in the car and put it in neutral, the tires still spun and the driveshaft was still turning, I had her apply the brakes and it stoped but when she released the brakes the driveshaft started spining again and the car was in neutral.
I then had here go from neutral to reverse to neutral to drive and kept doing it while I was under the car looking at the tranny motor mount to see if it was moving under this slight load, that was OK but the tranny made a terrrible clunking sound when going thru the sequence I had her do. whats wrong? Tranny going out? slipping bad?
The other day when I was in traffic and just started to move ther was a noise under the car aswell...Im pretty sure its not my rearend ....
whatcha guys think? whats wrong?
tranny fluid is ok....

I have a similar problem ... with mine it is ... the long brace running beside the driveshaft and it should have a rubber bushing around it toward teh front of teh vehichle and as it wore down on my car it got noisy every time I either had to brake hard or take off fast ... it is my advice to fix this as soon as possible because if not it will wear down and everytime torque hits it it will pull the driveshaft into a bind at the u-joint at the rear end ... which is the problem I am experiencing now with my 84 z28

I replaced that about 2 months ago with a ES torque arm bushing so its not that.

How can I tell if the tranny is slipping?
I know the obvious such as massive rpm's with no movement and the noticable slipping feeling...
but if I dont have any of that what are some other ways to tell?
If I was to have my tranny checked out if I pull it out and take it somewhere, what would they look at? could they tell just from dropping the pan or would they have to go into the tranny to find something wrong with it?
If it doesnt need a rebuild I would hate to pay for it just for them to make some money off me. know what I mean!?
