Two schools of thought of which I'm aware:
1) On the front of the radiator, in front of your primary fan (if you have dual electrics). This way, you'll get the most air flow through the tranny cooler in stop & go. But, some say you pick up heat from the radiator this way.
2) In the air flow away from the radiator. This keeps the tranny cooler from picking up radiated heat from the radiator, but slow vehicle speed air flow will be reduced.
On the '57, I did both (but then, I don't have an in-radiator tranny cooler).
