Moser 9" fill hole?
Moser 9" fill hole?
Where is it?
I went to my exhaust guy earlier today to see about getting a better exhaust system. When he lifted it up, I saw my Moser 9" rear was leaking oil from the pinion seal. So I went and got a bottle of gear oil, and will take the car to my rear end guy later this week... but I want to refill it with oil so it won't mess up the gears form my trip up there.
But I couldn't find the damn fill hole... I was thinking it might be behind the torque arm mount, but the hole I saw seemed to be too low. So, anyone with a Moser 9" do you know where the oil fill hole is on it? Pictures would be very nice. I can only get the car up so high on jack stands, so any help will be appreciated.

Yeah... right where that silver plug is on the right.
That is the only one I saw, and it looked like I needed a 3/4 ratched extension to get it off. I figured it would be higher, doesn't look like too much oil can go in it from that low. with all the oil soaking my rear end, and on my driveway, the damn thing would have to be practically completely drained!
Man, I need to fill this up in the morning and get it to the shop ASAP.
Thanks man.

It holds plenty
My arms were sore from pumping the gear lube in that night hehe. I had to drill and tap that hole since this was a used part that never had a fill hole. Probably had it on the housing on whatever vehicle it came out of.

I jacked up the car from the rear of the SFC's and put in two jackstands. I got under there with a creeper and foudn the fill hole, but my 3/4 socket extension didn't fit. After hitting it with some WD-40, I saw that it was not a square, but a torx socket. So I managed to get it off (required a lot of torque) with a T-55 torx bit. as soon as it came out, it leaked a lot of oil, so I quickly plugged it back up again and torqued it back down. I took off the vent hose on the axle tube and cleaned that out, it seemed fine, figuring that might be the problem.
Now.. I am sure it is leaking from the pinion seal. The amount of oil in my driveway and soaking most of the differential and some other components in the rear would indicate to me that uite a bit of oil has leaked... yet it seemed like it was plenty full when I took the plug out. So... what should I do? Should I dump some oil down the axle tube vent hole, or should I just clean it up and keep driving it? I dunno what, if anything, is wrong here.

The 9" only hold about 2 2/3 qts at most. They have sealed outter bearings/axle bearings so the only thing we're lubing is the pinion/ring gear. Do not install any more fluid-especially through the vent tube. If you pulled the fill plug out and it was running out of the hole, your fine.
Just take it somehwere and have the pinion seal replaced.
