Probably the reason there wanting to charge you so much is because to go from 273's to 373's you'll have to change carriers or posi's. 273 uses a series 2 carrier and to go up to 3.42,3.73,or 4.10's you'll need a series 3 carrier.

Also the swap isnt bad but you'll have to set up your rear with everything your changeing and if you've never done it before at least have someone there that has done this before to help instruct you on what to do.

Richmond gear offers 3.73 gears that are designed for use on two series carriers, thus saving the monies needed for a new carrier/posi. I would ask the person you visited what all is included in his charges, and before having the work performed, get a written estimate, especially if this is your first dealing with this person.

Are you sure there is no on else in your area who performs this service?

The gears are around 200 bucks at summit, and the install kit is another 150, plus fluids and additives. It should not cost more than another 200 for labor to install.

Oh, yea, are you sure your car is a posi? Maybe he was charging you this much to convert a 2.73 peg leg to a 3.73 posi.

You might also look at buying a used rear end with 3 series gears and a posi already in it.

I agree with what red87iroc said. Make sure you know what rear you have first. You have more options if you don't mind spending almost 1K on your rear. For less you can buy a posi rear and then put whatever gears in it you wish and still not be out $950.
Shoot if it was me and I had that kind of money to spend on a rear,I sure wouldn't spend it on a stock rear. For a little more money you could get a Ford 9in. or Chevy 12 bolt for the rear and it would a lot stronger than your current 10 bolt.

I am planning to do the same swap myself this winter when I can't do body work anymore.

I bought 97 3.23 posi (turned out 3.42) and want to switch to 4.10.

Take a look at http://www.ringpinion.com. They have installation kit ($89, I think) and on the page they have a PDF with installation instructions. Unfortunately the link doesn't work on their website, but I found this link to the same doc that does work: http://www.ringpinion.com/tech/yukoninst.pdf (or maybe it's just my computer).

I talked to one of their sales guys and he said for $305, I can get 4.10 ring/pinion gears, rebuild kit and lifetime warranty on the gears so if I ever break them, they will get replaced without any questions.

Swap doesn't look too bad. You will need a press for a few things, I think. You also need torque wrenches and dial indicator. Everything else is standard tools. The only tricky part is setting the shims right so you have correct tooth pattern, but they give you all the shims and explain how to do that.
