700R4 and flexplate ?

Will the 700R4 shift right or at all withought the help of the ECM?

Does an 86' T/A, 305 (H), 700R4 have a 153 or 168 tooth flexplate? And are they internally our exturnally balanced?

shifting isn't controled by the ecm. all SBCs are internal balance exceptthe 400.

Does the ECM unit control tourqe conveter lockup?

Can I use a 168 tooth (2nd gen) flexplate on my 86' T/A?, and would it need to be balanced before installing?

Yes, ECM controls TCC lockup.

Then for the tranny to operate properlly all the emission components would need to be put back on so the ECM could comunicate with such parts.

I am trying to retire the ECM on my '84 Camaro exactly as you put it. But how do you go about getting around the Torque Converter Lockup control? Is there a default mode or something for it without the computer?

If that is the case how can I work around the locout on the tourqe converter? And is it reversable for later?

Cause if I can that would be great, i'm trying to save some money were ever possible.

you can order a kit, from the major racing companies, that allows you to manually control the Lockup of the converter. Do a search and you will find it all over.

By using that magic search button, you can also find a diagram on how to make your own lockup control.

The ECM doesn't have a default? What happens when the TCC 4-prong connection on the trans. goes bad? Has anyone tried this TCC kit before and how'd you like it?

That wiring arrangement will have the converter locking immediately after the 1-2 shift, which isn't all that desirable a thing. Adding a switch or two would make it much nicer. Also the 4-3 pulse switch can cause objectionable flaring sometimes on a 4-3 downshift and can be eliminated if necessary.

The TCC is really just an emissions and fuel economy thing. If the TCC lockup quit functioning, you would notice a small decrease in MPG probably, and slightly higher trans temps on long drives. Wouldn't hurt anything though

It's a little more than that, proper operation of the TCC is essential to keeping the temperature down while cruising in O/D, especially if you're cruising below the converter's stall speed.

thunder

Do 3rd gen's com stock with 153 or 168 tooth flexplates?

So in other works I would have to rig this up to run off a switch (toggle) to bypass the lockup system or run a set of wire between the switch on the tranny and harness plug. I think I will pass on that and get the money together buy a cam kit and a computer chip to go with and after market intake and the .060 over bore.
