swapping 7.625 gears, need specs thanks

ive got an 87 s-10 3.42 7.625 axle out here and i have crappy highway ratio in the axle under the 82 trans am, its way too high of ratio, 3.42 would be perfect in the car,

so other than a new crush sleeve what else would i need in order to set up the s-10 carrier and gears into the trans am rear ?

how much backlash is good for a used R and P ?

set used gears tooth contact pattern more towards heel or toe ?

thanks

For teh S-10 carrier, you need some other carrier, unless you just like working on that rear.

You need bearings and a shim kit, and a handful of tools.

For a used R&P, I'd suggest .006" - .009".... basically, to the low side of the tolerance range. But not below .005". Gears (or any other piece of metal) "grow" when they get hot, and the backlash goes away; better to have a little too much, than end up in a situation with "negative backlash". I have learned from hard experience, that 2 metal parts can't occupy the same volume at the same time.

lol so true hehe

metals dont like it when another invades its space! :P

im totally lost on what you mean there

just not seeing it, its not clicking in my brain right now,

you mean that the s-10 carrier wont work in the t/a housing ?
or ?
arent 82 trans am axles 7.625 ?
no ?
