cant shift into first gear

cant shift into first gear
ok i just got my new automatic installed, and i can move the shifter through all the gears from park to 2nd, but it wont go into first.
any reason why? perhaps messing with the linkage underneath? do i need to loosen the bolt and readjust it somehow?
