Identifying carrier help please

Okay, thanks for helping me out.

I got a 28-sp posi carrier super cheap, but I don't know what it came out of or what gears it used to have.

How do you tell what series it is

Oh, it looks like this if it helps:

That's an Auburn. Looks like one of the ones that used to come stock in LT1 cars. It's probably 3-series, but I can't really tell from the pic. It probably came from somebody that got it from SLP back when they were selling those as take-outs, like they did the Torsens more recently.

Turn it over so we can see the other side of the ring gear flange; and take a pic, and leave it larger (like 480x320 or something) so we can see how "tall" that flange is, from the carrier bearing bore.

Hey thanks. I'm at work now so I can't get a pic, but the ring gear flange is closer to the center of the diff than my 3.08 carrier so I think it's 3-series. They have the ring gear moved closer to the center because the pinion is smaller, right?

So, assuming this is a 3-series, will this work in my car if I get 28-sp axles and a new set of gears?

And, what is it worth if it's in good condition? I thought $100 was a steal, but if I have to put in a new clutch pack and bearings, it might end up costing a lot more

Thanks for your help, I love these kinds of forums

Yes, the pinion on the higher-numbered ratios is smaller, so the flange is closer to the center.

Auburn sells parts and will rebuild it; it will cost nearly as much as a new one though. You'll never guess how I know that.

Yes it will work in your car, with 90-92 axles.

$100 is what SLP was charging for them straight out of breand-new cars, if it's the stock one. So if it's used, .... you paid the same as you would have 5 years ago, for new. You'll have to be the judge on whether that's a "deal" or not.

There's 3 "levels" of them; stock, "High Perf", and "Pro". The springs are a different color: no color for stock ones, yellow for HP, orange for Pro. There may be other differences as well, but that's a quick visual ID of it.

You'll need new bearings; there's none on it.

I liked the one I had, until it self-destructed.

The springs are yellow, so I guess I got a hi-po one.
It is used, so it wasn't such a good deal...
Oh well, anything is okay as long as it gets rid of ol' peg-leg
