Tranny shifting problems

Howdy,

I just recently bought a 1991 Z28 with a 305TPI auto setup. It is a project car and I will be replacing the automatic with a 6-sp eventually (within a year). For now, I would like to get the current automatic to shift right so that I can drive the car.

She never takes off in first gear. I have to put the lever in '1' to get her to user first gear. But then (after I take off and shift into D again) she would not shift out of first until 35mph no matter how much/little pedal I give her. Then she slams into 2nd and smoothly shifts into 3rd.

Similar with 2nd gear. When I manually select '2' and then 'D', she won't get out of 2nd gear when I'm accelerating even past 60mph.

Last (but not least): she won't use 4th gear at all. I can run 85mph (didn't try to go any faster, lots of cops around here) but she's still in 3rd gear.

Oh, one more thing. After a while (I assume, when the tranny heats up enough), I can't get her to go into first gear no matter what I try.

Is this just a valve body issue or would it need a tranny rebuild? I mean, I am no transmission expert but from what I gather, the gears are there (at least 1-3 ) but I don't have much control over them (which valve body provides, right?)

Thanks in advance for any replies.
Lou
