strange tranny noise...sounds like stones
Hey everyone. I posted a day or two ago about my trans problems I have been having. Well...I kind of forgot to post about the noise its making. When in gear, and I come to a stop, it almost sounds like stones or gravel being churned around in a washing machine. Its not all the time. Sometimes its louder than others. Its a light sound too...not like something real heavy being bounced around. It either sounds like something being bounced around...or like fluid is squirting through an opening that it isnt supposed to. Since I am at a stop...is it safe to assume that whatever the sound is is coming from my torque converter? Since that should be the only part spinning? Is it something that will probably stop the thing from working real soon? Let me know if any of you have an idea of what it could be. Thanks

Hmm...thats a possibility I guess. Im going to pull the shield off this weekend and see what I can find. It sounds more like something actually rattling around in there...not so much like an interference. Even today, it went all day without making the noise. So Im still drawing a blank. Good suggestion tho...Ill check the torque on those suckers. Any more ideas?

As I spoke yesterday, mine started doing the same thing. Only at a stop though. I check the TC bolts and they are in nice and snug. Maybe the TC is going bad?

Yeah Im beginning to think its something to do with the torqur converter. Also, someone mentioned that it could be a cracked flexplate too. Sooo...I really need to get under there and check things out. Its been pretty quiet lately...only made the noise once the other day. Ill let ya know what I find when I pull things apart.

its your torque convertor
i went thru the same thing my 83 recaro T/A blew the guts out of my torque convertor and cracked the flexplate. the noises were only at low rpm as the centrifugal force pushed the loose metal outward tightned there for quieting them. the best way to check it is to listen too see if the noise quits at higher rpm's. if not then it internal, good luck. i replaced my flecplate and bolted up a 2600 stall.. now my tranny is flaking apart...lol oh well if it aint one thing ... it another...

Haha...I hear ya on that. Well...I know the noise goes away at higher RPM's. Even just off idle it goes away. My tranny isnt going to last too much longer. Im planning on a tranny swap soon...if not a motor/tranny swap. But for now, I just want the car to not break down on me. I mean winter is coming soon...so I guess it doesnt matter. But the car was down all summer cuz it wouldnt pass emissions. So I would like to drive it during the fall atleast. Beat t-top weather in my opinion. Thanks for the input. I really need to get under there. I just havent had a chance to get my hands dirty the past few weeks.
