Slow Shifting Tranny

1987 Camaro IROC-Z
350 TPI, Automatic

Transmission is shifting extremely slow. It was fine, then the car sat for a few months (2 or 3)... I changed out some stuff, namely the Transmission fluid and filter.. Since then the transmission has been shifting slow. You can feel it even when giving it a bit of gas, but VERY noticable under hard acceleration. Transmission shifts out of first, there's a pause, then it shifts into second. During the pause the rev's will go up depending on how much gas you're giving it. It jumps higher with the more gas you're giving it.

It's also slow to shift out of park.

At first I thought there was too much transmission fluid, but I think the extra leaked out, and the dipstick shows it at a good level. Before, the transmission would leak fluid if I put some in, but the dipstick would always show hardly any fluid on the end... If I put more in, it would just leak out, but always stopping at a certain point, and it always shifted great at that level.

But I know about the TV cable (anyone have a picture of which cable it is, at the throttle body, I believe?) I know a lot of people seem to suggest adjusting it.. Think the TV cable could be my problem? I'm not positive what it controls, but I know it's for the transmission...

Sorry for the bad news but it sounds like the trans is dying a slow(typical) death. What you are describing sounds like slipping shifts. Each slip burns the clutches more. A tranny shop can install a pressure guage on the side and tell you if it can live or needs freshened. Good luck either way.... Pete

I was thinking that too, I hope not, though.. I did the "adjustment" on the TV cable.. the wire seems sort of loose, but it seems like it should be that way (it tightens as you open the throttle)

Havn't driven it, though... Doubt it changed anything. Waterpump is going out, now...

It seems weird that the tranny would start going out (assuming it is) after flushing the fluid and changing the filter. That seems very lame, to me.

its not uncommon for that to happen when you flush the transmission fluid and change the filter ..its been known to happen ...

Trans fluid is very high in detergent. New fluid super cleans and flushes the trans. Removing the crud can sometimes cause what you arte going thru. You can dump a bottle of Lucus trans treatment in it. Probably wont help but it may. Worth a few bucks to try.
