I recently swapped the 700r4 in my 91 Formula. Ever since, I have been unable to select gears with the shifter. When I hook the linkage up initially, I can sit in the car and go through P,R,N,D,2,1 just fine, but when I try to go back up the list (1,2,D,N,R,P) nothing happens; it doesn't actually shift the transmission, and you don't feel it click. Then you can just move the gear selector up and down and it slides freely, it does not actually change anything. I put the tranny and the selector in neutral and hooked the linkage back up, no go, still had the same problem.

I think my shift cable might be damaged. This is what it looks like close to the transmission. Could this be my problem?

Any help is appreciated....

 

Yep you need a new shift cable, mine did the same thing, had to manually reach underneath and switch to park. I just got one from a junk yard car.

 

yeah just get a new cable...i also had the same thing happen in my camaro...

what is happening when you move the shifter is that instead of the cable inside the protective cover acutally going in and out like it should, the damaged cable housing is alowing the cable to just bend up...
