Tranny mystery

My T-5 starts to whine when I put it in 5th gear. But not always. If I shift steady through the gears the whine starts immediately when I hit 5th but if I go slow and shift from 3rd to 5th, it waits until I get to around 55 mph. It's been doing this for several weeks. When it first started it would start at about 45 mph. I kept driving it just to see what it would do, like explode or something. (then I'd have to get a new tranny) But what happened is it backed off and now starts at about 55-60 mph. It stops momentarily if I hit the brakes hard or if I hit a dip in the road. I checked the fluid level and it checks full. Weird or what?

It's the reverse gear rattling around in there.

There's a spring that's supposed to hold the gear firmly up against an O-ring when it's not in reverse; sounds like that spring has broken.

Not a real big deal, just an annoyance.

Removal of the transmission is the only way to get at it?

Well, one morning to take it out, a couple of days at the shop and an afternoon to put it back in. Won't be the first time. Thanks.

Fortunately it's not a terribly invasive repair.... doesn't require mainshaft or clutch gear removal. If the trans works well otherwise, DON'T let them talk you into a "rebuild"; even with whatever variation of the "we can't warranty it if we don't empty your wallet first" line they come at you with.
