More than likely your tranny mount is the culprit. Mine mad ethe same noise after I was in reverse, floored it then slammed it into drive on my 86 Z28. Easy thing to replace.

If it is the tranny mount, spend the extra money and get the poly mount! Defiantly worth the money!

Lets say its not the trans mount and its not the u-joints or the t/a mount.. What mechanically inside of a transmisson woudl cause it to shift like it has a shift kit and clunk when being put into gear?? The trans was rebuilt about a year ago and doesn't have many miles on it and doesn't slip or anyting.. By the way its a 4l60E.. Thanks guys

could be in the rear end also only thing holding you in place is the brakes so anything from engine mounts to rear end gears

I know what your talking about. Shifts real hard when you go from reverse to drive and makes a bang. I dont know what would cause that in a 4L60E, then again I dont really know all the possible causes with a standard 700-R4/4L60 either.

Hmm that's interesting to hear. When my 700R4 is in drive, and I put it into reverse, it clunks and the car bucks. ...And mine also shifts like it has a shiftkit. I dont know much about my transmission's history, but it has 130k on it and the fluid is a little brown. (doesnt smell burned) And it does not slip.

Oh and when I replaced my mount all it helped with was how it would bang when the tires let go.

Whatever the problem is, I think we both have it...

I checked the mounts today and there fine.. If I put it in neutral and grab the driveshaft I can turn it and hear the clunk in the transmission. Now I always thought it was just clutches and stuff in an automatic but theres somthing actually clunking liek a gear..Anyone who has rebuilt a trans please post, Maybe dana at probuilt could help out..

I have the same problem. I have changed all mounts, tranny, and torque arm. replaced the u-joints and have rebuild the rear end with new bearings and such. I thought that it mighta been the backlash but that wasn't the culprit. I still have the clunk to this day.

Re: Clunk when put in gear??

tranny mount

or perhaps too much backlash in the ring and pinion gear
