What RPM does Auto trans switch gears?

At what RPM does an automatic 700R4 switch gears? I think it only has 3 gears, since that's all I feel.

Before I took it to the tranny shop, it would switch gears at around 2500-3000 rpm and I would be cruising at 70mph with my rpm's around 1500-2000. This sounded normal to me.

After I got it back, it's now switching at around 4000-4500 rpm. When I first start the car and hit the gas, I would only go about 20mph, but it sounded like I should've been going faster because my rpms would shoot to 4000 before it switched to 2nd gear. This does not sound normal to me because normal for me was around 3000. Someone please tell me if I'm going crazy or not. I don't even know if what I'm typing makes any sense. Please Help!

the 700 is a 4 speed trans with overdrive I have a v8 and at wot it shifts at 5000rpm it depends on your throttle position more throttle the higher it shifts

Sounds like you might need to adjust the TV cable. Do a search on how to adjust it, it's been covered a lot.

I found it. There was this little, metal wire at the very top of the engine. I think it was the throttle cable since every time I hit the gas pedal it moved back and forth. Anyways, it was a little dirty so I cleaned it and now it shifts correctly. Thanks to those that posted.

Yeah, that TV cable is what you wanted. Transmission shifting isn't entirely decided by RPM, its mainly decided by how far you've pushed the pedal (and therefore how far the cable has been pulled). I had the same problem when I had my 700r4 rebuilt (when floored, it would shift up at 2600 RPMS), and readjusting the TV cable fixed it.

Just to clarify a bit here, the shift point is determined by two variables: throttle position (TV Valve position and associated line pressure) and RPM (governer speed and governer pressure).. This is why you can change the governer weights/springs and affect both part throttle and WOT shift points.. The two (tv position and rpm) work together to determine the final shift point.
