Tranny Rebuild.

I got a 91 v6 firebird and was wondering, from everything I read that year firebird got a 700r4 tranny if it were an automatic car, is that true?

Second question is I'm gonna rebuild my tranny because it's hesitating a little when I hit the gas. It'll take a second for it to catch. I'm planning on getting http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=19&page=1 and having my gf's brother rebuild the tranny. He's a ford master tech and said he could do it, he just wanted to know would I need any special tools to do it? He was also asking me to get a book on it. And lastly a lip seal remover I think it was... Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

For some good books, you can't beat ASTG. They have 2 or 3 books on rebuilding 700R4s. On a side note, just so you know, in '91 they changed the name of the 700R4 to 4L60 (not to be confused with 4L60E).

Here's a link: Click Here

There are 2 or 3 special tools you need, but I can't for the life of me remember their names.

You will need many special tools. Teflon ring installer/sizer for input shaft. a different teflon ring installer/sizer for pump seals. A servo length checking tool. These 3 tools are approx $130 each! A quality bushing driver set may be needed. These are $200-$400 depending on quality and amount of drivers. 2 lip seal protectors are needed at $35 each. A front pump puller is $100. A universal spring compressor $60 or so. A bench mounted spring compressor $160. A lip seal tool is needed although some old timers carefully use a .005 feeler guage. Do not forget the pump body alignment tool. A couple hose clamps can be substituted. These tools and a few hand tools are all you need to properly do a 700-r4 (4l-60) box.

That is friggin insane, I might as well just buy a new 4l60 from pro built for $1700, probably be cheaper.
