Need some info on 700R auto shifting

My 88 has the 700R4, works great, recent fluid change and all looks fine in the pan. Notice that when I put it in gear, especially cold, it really jumps, heavy foot on brake needed. Also note that when I half throttle it, or more, it shifts into second at about 2500 rpm, way too soon. Really grabs, burns rubber and jumps sideways, but just shifts too early. Is this normal for this trans or do I need some adjusting on the TV cable, or a modulator? Not real swift on these automatics.

I would look into adjusting your TV cable to spec. That would be the most likely problem. Allen

Dont use the tv cable for adjusting shfit points. Make sure its adjusted right though. Just set it to the max tv setting and change the weights and springs in the governor to get the shift points you want. Do a search on governors and you will find some good stuff. The ones from an IROC would be a good place to start they have the part throttle set for higher shifts.

I spent some time setting mine to match my motors torque and horsepower peaks. It shifts just past my torque peak at heavy part throttle. And about 400 rpm past my horsepower peak at wot.

Thanks for the replies. This is an IROC, originally had a 2 something rear gear, now a 3:23 but I doubt that had anything to do with it. Part throttle downshifts are fine also, sure passes a a slow car nice. Wondering if a different governor, say from a V6 car would be the right way to go? Have to study this out I guess.

With full throttle shifts the governor is the culprit providing the TV cable is adjusted properly. I just adjusted my shift points with the B&M governor kit. I bought mine at Summit Racing. Allen

Now we're getting somewhere, I'll look into the gov. kit for sure. Thanks.

After you receive your kit you should get a scale and measure the old weights on the governor. Mine both measured pretty much the same. Then measure the weights in the kit. All six are different. All I had to do was put the next lighter weight on one side of my governor. I left the other side alone. I was trying to raise the shift point like you. I had read a lot of posts on the subject and what others had done and I had a good idea on what to do. Luckily I got it right the first time. Allen
